This year's convention will be held on April 8 at the Coliseum Bar and Banquet Facility in Madison. The convention will be a full day event. During the morning the business meeting will be held. We will provide lunch with a speaker following the business meeting.
Hal Greenwood, a former advisory director to the Federal Reserve Board during the Reagan administration, will be speaking at lunch. Mr. Greenwood has been involved with politics since the 1960s, and will be sharing a great deal of his political insight with us. The main topic of his talk will be the erosion of our liberties in recent years. Mr. Greenwood is well known by the media and will likely attract media attention from several areas around the state with this, his first speaking engagement in a number of years. Greenwood has been president, CEO and director of a number of banks and bank associations since the 1960s, and also worked under Hubert Humphrey's and President Carter's administrations.
Following lunch our speaker will be David Kelley, past state chair and 1994 Illinois candidate for governor, who won election to the Rockford School Board in 2003. David will talk about how he won election to the second largest school board in Illinois, his family's 20+ years of Libertarian activism, and how, as head of the Rockford Libertarians, his group was able to repeal home rule in Rockford.
Following David Kelley's presentation will be a number of short talks by libertarians, and possibly others, who hold public office currently, and those who will be running for office in the next election. Tentatively or definitely planned at this time are: Dave Redick (U.S Senate candidate), Tim Peterson (State Treasurer candidate), Bob Collison (state assembly candidate), Ben
Masel (U.S. Senate candidate), Kirby Brant (Libertarian on WI State Election Board), and Jim Mueller (Village President of Middleton). Ed Thompson will likely also talk, with a longer speech expected if he decides to run for U.S. Congress.
Following talks by candidates and office holders will be a discussion by Chris Kleissmet of Citizens for Responsible Government, on recalls of various politicians in Wisconsin lead by his group. John Benson, former two-term WI Superintendent of Public Schools is tentatively scheduled. He is now promoting justice in Dane Co. (www.justicedanecostyle.com) If time and speakers are available, we are also hoping to have a debate between candidates running for U.S. Senate.
Following the afternoon session there will be a cocktail hour followed by a banquet and a keynote speaker. Vernie Kuglin of the Libertarian Party of Tennessee will speak on her 2003 IRS tax case, and her thoughts on the current status of tax honesty.
In addition to speakers, we will have at least one informational booth, sponsored by the WI LP. We are working on scheduling several more booths from affiliated groups at this time.
