Chair’s Notes ##4—Spring 2025 Non-partisan elections in Wisconsin

By Tim Krenz

Acting Chair, LPWI

The time arrives this December for registering as a candidate and collecting a small number of signatures on nomination papers to get you ballot access for Wisconsin’s spring non-partisan elections!! These offices almost all involve local-level and county-level governing positions, excepting the state supreme court. Libertarians, do not miss your opportunity to run for an office in your area! I’ll tell you why below and we’ll show you how on www.lpwi.org !

As everyone should know, the closer the government institution or office, the more that government directly impacts everyday living. We feel its reach and its effects in our homes, our neighborhoods, our schools, and communities.

With the banalities and near irrelevancies of the fall partisan elections, people can often lose sight of the near tyrants or even the close benefactors

To fill most of the Libertarian Party’s keys to success, we need more members, and we need more of those members elected to local offices. Furthermore, local campaigns have several advantages for Party members and supporters.

1) They generally do not require a lot of money to run, or only a proportionately smaller amount for the office sought. 2) They generally can avoid having to use partisan labels; and even among personalities, 3) the races can stick to issues and policies as much as possible. 4) They usually only require the candidate and not staff for the more rural-area positions. 5) The time to do the job of serving does not amount to another full-time job. And finally and most importantly, 6) these positions make absolute and real practical differences in peoples lives, and in the way things get approached, solved and done.

For Libertarian Party members running and even serving in these offices, the effort realizes two important goals. For the candidate/office holder, it provides a rich experience and some amount of satisfaction for doing the public service, for the right reasons—for personal and ethical freedoms. For the Party, its spreads the moral gospel of individual liberty for all in the most effective possible, which ultimately impacts membership and oru future success across the state of Wisconsin.
